song performed: “This Ol Wheel” from the album The Wolf
conan’s reaction: “Yeah! *mumbling* That was good thank you so much! *shakes shooter hand* thank you very much, shooter jennings everybody, that was great, we’ll take a break, we’ll be right back.”
okay I have a whole slew of these to catch up on, thank you for your patience. What is amazing right now is that I’ve been covering in some way or another Conan’s Musical Guests on his Late Night with Conan O’Brien for over a year now. I have retitled these posts as “cwned: musical guest”, an appreciation nod to “pwnage”.
Okay, on Shooter…
“His middle name comes from his father’s drummer, Richie Albright. His father nicknamed him “Shooter” after he urinated on a nurse shortly after birth”
It’s the son of Waylon Jennings, the man that belts out “the good ol’ boys” on the intro for Dukes of Hazzard as well as the man I always get confused with Hank Williams Jr. since they both are country and both have those strange Abe Lincoln-meets-Boilermaker beards. Low and behold, Shooter is so proud of his Dad (RIP), that he’s up on stage waving around the Dixie flag right on his belt guitar for all of the Confederate States of America to see and cheer about.
Tonight he is on stage playing the same song I think he played for Lettermen and Daly and maybe Kimmel too…uh. Time to rehearse another song maybe?
We start with a pounding of drums, almost war drums, banging away with a Nick Lachey family look-a-like on the skins wearing a black muscle tank that reads “AfterEden”. Now that sounds born again, or porn again to me, so I got scared thinking maybe it was the latter and this drummer was sitting playing in his skivvies. The camera pans away to reveal a whole ensemble of players. Amazing! There is Shooter, a fiddler, a guitar player, bass player, a keyboardist, and what looks like two back-up singers. The fiddler, who I kid you not looks like a Nick/Aaron Carter family look-a-like member in a sport coat, starts the song off with a four stanza lick.
Shooter himself sports a beard w/stache, long hair, brown/orange shades, longsleeve ocean blue shirt and what look like black jeans. The other members begin to fall into a weird space of pop-boy-band family relatives. The guitarist starts looking like a skinny and less hairy-but-more-hair Joey Fatone from NSync look alike. He gets some great licks in there, kudos to the Fatone guitarist. I was happy that Shooter hired a women to play bass too, kind of keeps things a bit more fresh than a bunch of good ‘ol boys playing “cOuntry” music.
I stand corrected. That is a man. And I hate to say that in the end this song reminds me of something Kid Rock-ish, kind of a rapping of sorts over slow beat country rhythm with strong pick-ups on the chorus. It’s a good song though and a tight performance (since they’ve been practicing on other Late Night shows).
