Hanna Montana? or was it Miley Cyrus? and Dad? or was it Dad? was on Leno tonight.
The DC music scene is a fierce one. The Dismemberment Plan, Trans Am, Fugazi, Minor Threat, John Philip Sousa. And tonight is a mish mosh of formers including frontman John Davis of Q and not U. Mix that rhythmic punk sound of DC and infuse with Saddlecreek Records reflection and that is exactly what georgie james comes off to me as.
It’s all black clothing in the front row and then white in the back with drummer Andrew Black wearing white polo with black toque. Funny with the name thing no? It’s fantastic four on stage, but really blonde circle John Davis on vocals and guitar and Laura Burhenn on keys and vocals. John is just like me, a bit bearlike in stature with wide stance and hair that goes from light blonde on top down to surly brunette blond on beard (that part is not like me). Dressed up in a navy polo, I get memories of some of the guys I’d eat lunch with back in school. Laura is well put together and bird-like in frame with a ton of hair for her opposite smaller size head. Proportions are off too - Laura has huge sharp eyes and forward pouty rocker mouth while John has more brow that distracted eyeballs and thin beard square mouth.
Tonight’s song changes up a bit. Intro is almost 16 beat disco dance which then frays a bit and then levels off to a sassy march then very indie awkward change up. There is a lot of singing which was repetitive to the point of being part of the rhythm section. Nice tune, nice balance of hard and cute. I’m sure we’ll see you again georgie james.
