song performed: “Lover” from the album Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon
conan’s reaction: “hey! *shakes bass* thank you so much *shakes rhythm guitar* that was killer *shakes devendra hand* thank you so much. devendra banhart everybody, stick around we’ll be right back, stick around everybody. *shakes guitar and keyboard*”
BTW I have not heard as loud of screaming by fans in a long time - that was someone with a blood curdler! some pipes!
devendra is coming out of his shell. case in point, look at this photo of him.

first off I am becoming more and more impressed with this week’s musical guests. it’s like an awesome wave is coming by bringing good acts.
so yeah, I was introduced to devendra in the extremely tender folk music movement of 04??? where rejoicing in the hands was like the secret combo fatality or bability move. so it is strange for me to see him on stage playing an upbeat slightly psychodelic song, but I’m cool with it.
first off, things are great - max weinberg can be heard in the background saying “very cool , very cool guy” when conan introduces them. that is a good sign. Sign #2 is the horn section is on stange with devendra and company including back-up percussionist man. Sign #3 is that the band looks like yellow submarine up on stage - and maybe that is because they are called the spiritual boner.
devendra is thin as a daisy stem, wearing all black with pink, red, yellow cumberbun and red suspenders (which are so in). he’s got inked teardrops as well. I’m not used to hearing him sing so low range-wise, but he is great on stage, extending his out of scale arms to the sky. drummer and guitar player on stage left have similar ideas with long hair, beard, and light colour formal wear. one is wearing a hat though. spiritual boner’s rhythm guitarist is with less full beard and less hair, but is super spunky.
after a while i start to just make out the image of a long timbre saw waving back and forth on stage like it was being balanced on the end of finger - that would be devendra. midway through the song there is a break and the one downer of a band member, the keyboardist, hops on the congos and changes personalities - it’s great.
this man is an artist and optimist. the optical illusion is confirmed when conan comes onto the stage, dwarfing mr. banhart. sometimes your presence projects more than one can imagine. good posture for one. devendra’s ma must be proud.
