ode to this filipino disbanded band and star of “Wish Upon A Star”

it’s movie night tonight! so yeahr recommended ere. i is older than dr. izzie “dramamama” stevens.
by the way, tonight’s show had emma watson from HP on. she done all grown up *tear*

song performed: “Stop Me” from the album Version
conan’s reaction: “hey! *leans in from stage left and pats mark on shoulder* thank you so much that was great. mark ronson everybody, we’ll take a break, we’ll be right back *claps twice* that was great *shakes daniel’s hand, bass hand, jason’s hand*”
this is a tough performance to cover because, well, the band came prepared. first off, let me say that I spent all day yesterday driving around in a car listening to this song, so I must have liked it yes? second, the band is prepared because most of them wore their names on their shirts, so i must respect this and write a little bit about each of them.
first off, it’s a whole band/production up here, very classy for what could be termed a “DJ” set, although Mark is more than that. It was a bit strange that Mark brought his own horn section instead of using the MW7, but I’m cool with dat. Mark is sharp in a nice dark dinner jacket and white dress shirt. Daniel is a bit more playful with a hollywood haircut, casual lumberjack look going on with a super long silver string round his neck.
JASON: you play keys, and really that is all of the “string section” via synth, so good job. quite a normal haircut, everything, methinks you’re a serious player or a musician/programmer - got that kind of thing going on.
PETE: you’re next on drums. you have a lot to think about since you are the rhythm in a song where rhythm is mucho importante. from a distance, you look a bit like a shaved football player (euro) jammin back there - shaved on the melon, not on the beardline. spot on with the drumming
THE: on trumpet. nice trumpet and embrosure. it looks like you’re playing on a 5-10g trumpet so kudos on that! I missed your presence on the lower notes, but you were there for the loud high ones ala trumpet-style. you also win clean-shaven award.
HAGGIS: on tenor. you do not win clean shaven award, but that’s only because of your goatee. I think you win best effort award, cause I noticed you grimaced from effort a lot. good job!
HOG GANS: I totally can’t read your shirt but you were on bari and spot on! bad ass is more like it. reminded me that I should take up bari-sax someday. too bad your instrument is so big that your t-shirt makes no sense either alone or with your bandmates
PIXIES: on bass. cool looking guy with a nice rim hat and casual-yet-formal jeans. the bass line is what helped make this song come to be and you looked tre smooth doing it. you even shot your guns off at the end of the song in celebration. cute.
also there was an auxilary percussionist tucked way in the back and I couldn’t get his shirt, but you get recognized!
some day I will have HD and this will be a much easier exercise. bo.

song performed: “Direct Hit” from the album It’s A Bit Complicated
conan’s reaction: “great. *shakes guitar 1 hand* that was fantastic *shakes eddie hand* hey, thank you very much, your glasses alright? *shakes guitar 2 hand* thank you *shakes bass hand, salutes drummer, then shakes* art brut everybody that’s our show! i want to thank all of our guests, daniel radcliffe, carlos mencia, stay tuned for last call with carson daly, bye bye everybady, bye *shakes eddie’s hand again, leans in to talk to guitar 2 about his guitar and strumming method for a while, kind of weird really like the*”
so the UPS guy delivered two bands to me around the same time, one was called Bloc Party and won was called Art Brut and my brain kept them separate because one was singing with more drums, the other was a bit more kitschy and was really talking over song. that, and one band stuck to photos and sweat, the other neat color separation halftones and well…hair grease.
so Art Brut is on conan, which is kind of a huge strange thing. i sit here on an overcast day and write about this, but in the back of my mind it’s like I’m taking it for granted - kind of like that show “House, M.D.” where behind all of the camera visuals and OCD nightmarish stuff, Hugh Laurie is seriously British. Art Brut was Pitchforkmedia’s muse. Indie rock’s next big wonder both by make-up of the band and image and feel. And they’re on Conan. sure, they’ve suffered a bit from a softer sophmore album and equal fame from the video game circuit (i.e. kids will recognize them from playstation 2 maybe).
Tonight’s performance started off with eddie doing some jumping jacks with mic cord, which established him as a kind of goofy ogre that is coordinated - plus is loosened his shirt tuck a bit. soundwise I was instantly hit with an early nineties Pixies meets even earlier talking punk bands from the UK of the seventies. frontman eddie looks a bit like the kid from Angus, but all growns up with dyed-jet-black hair. drummer “mike” brings in a bit of the “music man 76 trombones feel” in, playing his kit standing up in a vest sweater. the two guitarist, I know not one from the other are then the ying and the yang of the gang. one sits in tight black clothes thrusting hips holding the guitar like a fire hose with hair like a super saiyan - the other is more turkey neck dance with spilled open shirt revealing red ascot tie with blonde froth on top ala austin scarlett from project runway. oh yeah, and then tucked off in the corner is little fredrica feedback who looks a bit like daria in the corner.
things start off with a polite shoulder pat from eddie to guitarist. the song has a nice anthem and energy to it, but at times talking was a bit repetitive. i wonder if most of art brut’s songs fade out?
There is no life imitating art in Art Brut that I know of save this… there’s a lesser known song on their old EP called “Emily Kane”, which happens to be the ex-jrhigh-girlfriend of two of my friends basically. here’s the lyrics. down to a “T” in terms of reality. that’s life imitating art, or I guess the other way around since the real Emily’s already married off happily with chillins.
Lyrics to “Emily Kane”
I was your boyfriend when we were 15
It’s the happiest that I’ve ever been
Even though we didn’t understand
How to do much more than just hold hands
There’s so much about you I miss
The clumsy way we used to kiss
I wish I convinced you, you’ve made a mistake
If memory serves, we’re still on a break
Other girls went and other girls came
I can’t get over my old flame
I’m still in love with Emily Kane
Every girl that I’ve seen since
Looks just like you when I squint
I know you said it’s for the best
I still don’t understand why you left
So much about you I miss
Everytime I see a couple kiss
I hope this song finds you fame
I want schoolkids on buses singing your name
Other girls went and other girls came
I can’t get over my old flame
I’m still in love with Emily Kane
I don’t even know where she lives
I’ve not seen her in 10 years…
9 months, 3 weeks, 4 days, 6 hours, 13 minutes, 5 seconds
Other girls went and other girls came
I can’t get over my old flame
All my friends think I’m insane
I’m still in love with Emily Kane
There’s a beast in my soul that can’t be tamed
I’m still in love with Emily Kane
I thought I’d never love again
I’m still in love with Emily Kane
The torch that I hold, is always a-flame
I’m still in love with Emily Kane
I hope this song finds you fame
I want schoolkids on buses singing your name
All my friends think I’m insane
I’m still in love with Emily Kane
Emily Kane, Emily Kane, Emily Kane!

song performed: “Thrash Unreal” from the album New Wave
conan’s reaction: “that was great. *shakes guitar* thanks for coming guy *shakes bass hand* that was great *shakes tom’s hand* hey thank you *shakes drum hand* that was a killer song, thank you so much. against me everybody, that’s alright. that is our show i want to thank our guest, mr. dennis leary, thanks to mark consuelos, stay tuned to last call with carson daly, bah everbady bah *turns back and shakes bass player hand, guitar 2 hand, drum hand, tom hand, chats with them, chuckles, pats drummer on back, asks tom about his guitar*”
banana’s in pajama’s are coming down the stairs…
this was a funny and i quote “chef boyardee ravioli : popular dish that’s stuffed with meat and in people’s mouths a minute after it’s out of the can :: paris hilton : glamorous hotel heiress”
back to “against me!” - homeboy has a gravely gravel-ly voice and has been to iceland. I’m jealous. I mean some of this music sounds pretty close to every la la la anthem youth angst ironic band out there. and there is angst and a bit of paranoia me thinks, but homeboy has a gravely voice and has been to iceland.
tonight’s performance comes with a cellophane bag filled with peta wilson buttons. tom gabel has tats all up his right arm and pink skin. his gravely voice is solid, no sense that it will go horse after a night’s show. i liked his strange tommy smothers smirk as he belted lyrics out. the song picked up momentum to a bop bop anthem portion which I found a bit boring compared to tom. two of his mates have beards and bass player is like a samsquanch with his long arm playing style. side singer took over vocals for one bit and it sounded more like what i would think a gravely loud voice would sound like - kind of out of control and apologetic like a buster poindexter cover.
bearded drummer in the back looked dern happy. and by the end of the song I’ve bought the anthem. it’s catchy and they boys is having fun. what else matters during late night?
damn i missed phil collins on live earth, haven’t seen him in years
I did these up at a getogether and they did a’ight

the orange inside surprise
- small piece of nice wild salmon, the wilder and more orange the better, skin off, bones out
- 1 sweet mango w/quasi orange flesh, skin off, token seed out
- 1/2 of a small red onion
- depending on your vibe 1 or 2 firm cloves of garlic
- a nice healthy dribble of toasted sesame oil
- a healthy pinch of salt
- a 3 second splash of soy sauce (like a tablespoon)
- a few shimmies of sugar
- IMPORTANT - about at least a sugarcube’s worth of fresh ginger
- a green scallion or onion
- a palm’s worth of fresh mint
- a palms’s worth of cilantro
- some panko bread crumbs do a good job of lightening it up a bit and sucking up leftover flavors
- the zest of a lime and small sprinkle of fish sauce if you wanna go nuts, or if you want spicy then add some red chili pepper flakes or small amount of fresh jalapeño.
so you take all of the above and chop up, maybe like finely chop the powbammers like the garlic and ginger and coarsely chop the other stuff (it’s all gonna get fried so it’s all good). you may want to marinate the salmon in the soy sauce and sesame oil before hand. toss it all up in a bowl and cover in the fridge while you do the next bit. if you forget anything it’s cool, but just take a mental taste of it before you put it away - it should be packed full o flavor!
the orange jacket
- 1 egg
- aboat 2 good size orange-as-the-sunset yams (nix sweet potato)
- another palm size bunch of mint and/or cilantro
- healthy pinch of salt and pepper
take either a box grater or mandolin slicer and basically grate the potato down into small strips, then grab another bowl. toss in the yams, and finely chopped greens, and the egg and mix it up a bit - you can squeeze together the strands of yam and they should be sticky and gooey but not soaked - if soaked, drain some of the yam juice, add another egg and/or panko bread crumbs.
then just layout a flat palm-size bit of the orange jacket, plop in a small mouth-size portion the orange surprise and squeeze into a ball. repeat. cover these balls in the fridge and let then chill out for a bit.
find some frying oil and fry them up good! they take a while to fry up, and they stay burning hot for a while, but are crunchy and tasty on the outside and savoury and of substance in the middle.
enjoy!
