conan: marc broussard

song performed
: “Love and Happiness” from the album S.O.S.: Save Our Soul
conan’s reaction: “that was great. thanks for doing it *shakes marc hand* thanks for coming back *shoulder touch* always fantastic. marc broussard everybody. that was alright *points at guitar* like this guitar *to marc* just leave it when you go. that’s our show everybody i do want to thank all our guests. john leguizamo, our thanks to him for stopping by. james blake, very cool of him, stay tuned for last call with carson daly, we’ll see you tomorrow bye everybody b-bye *shakes marc hand, then guitar, then drum, then bass, then keys, leans in to talk to marc*”

tonight we’re talking about marc, and as I put tips to keys mr. broussard is house of bluesin it down at my 2nd hometown of san diego. go marc! mr. broussard, son of mr. broussard the guitarist from new orleans (i think his nickname was big bacon in creole), comes to the stage off a wild surge to fame as one of non-depressing stories of hurricane katrina.

now he’s back with more philanthropy - an album of covers including tonight’s hit by al green. i can’t diss marc’s stage presence cause when i put together the body shape, the posture, the dress, the guitar, even the haircut - it’s pretty much a version of me - even his facial hair is about where mine maxes out. gone are the days of imagining myself as an iggy or perry ferrell on stage. but watch out marc - you’ll soon find yourself down the path of chunk-ko if you don’t start thinking about your shoulders. ?wtf?

the song is great - backup singing was a bit weak, but instruments were spot on, and only one part toward the end when marc got a frog in his cajuny throat. it was actually more of a feathery thing like a robin. still - a nice performance by a mature kid (he’s only 25 and covering al green with grown-ups - you do the math).

reflections on the iPhone from a user

NOTE: I asked one of my best mates to write a review on the iPhone - he’s been using one for about two weeks now, and it’ll be at least a year before it’s avail. up here in Canada, so I asked him to blurb about it.  here’s his spiel.

Task after task, function after function, life starts to get a little easier. When you have nearly unlimited knowledge at your finger tips, from the pocket of your pants, how can you not start to live life better? I’m amazed at how much I use and can use more than half the functions of my iPhone, all day long, (roughly 5 hours of my 18 hour day, since my last full charge.)
But its not all the functions that make my iPhone near the top of my list for greatest purchases ever, its how easy it has been to use them. Thousands of products have been doing the same tasks for years creating the mindset that everyone has regarding technology, wait, it will get cheaper, the first generation will have glitches, man, wouldn’t it be cool if it did this.
Up til now. Never has any interface made using technology fun, save the Wii. Because we’ve been tied to to a stylus, a mouse and a screen we can’t make work like or minds want them to.  Everytime I hand someone my phone, I barely have to tell them anything, and they just get big eyes and say wow. Its just easy, and intuitive, not because you understand computers, but because Apple paid attention to the mind, not convention. Everyone has gadgets that do things just fine, no real complaints, Apple perfected what has been wrong with technology ever since profit trumped creativity and ingenuity. The iPhone not only changes the playing field, it changes people and shifts their paradigm to demand a user interface and device that raises both eyebrows, not just one.

big thanks to Erik!!!

“raindrops keep falling on my head”  ??WTF???!?¿  recommended, but I’m not sure if I would name a film festival after it.

MGOC: They Might Be Giants

song performed
: “I’m Impressed” from the album The Else
conan’s reaction: “great job *shakes john 1 hand* gentlemen *shakes john 2 hand* thank you so much, that was fantastic (in response to ‘how are you?’) I’m good now. they might be giants! we’ll take a break, we’ll be right back.  thank you *shakes keyboard hand, drum hand*”

John Linnell and John Flansburgh are historical.  They’ve been doing this since before I started learned to tie my shoes up.  And then have such a good blend of whimsy with wham bam and youth and lavendar really.  They are just down-to-earth enough not to be from outer space, but just out-there enough to maybe theoretically be from Texas or OHIO (but their not).  see eddie from Ohio

Tonight’s performance featured mainly John Linnell on lyrics with silent partner John on geetar.  I don’t know the band well enough to know if they were playing with old buddies or not (they’re known for moving from back-up band to back-up band at one point playing with all dan’s).  Their drummer looked very happy and excited though like it’s a reunion tour, or he’s the new guy.

Two things I noticed - one was that I was a bit uncomfortable with the camera shots on John Linnell.  He sings into a static mic and kind of has this endearing head lean which is fine.  However, I don’t know if it was the drummer or the dancing, or whatnot, but his mic stand kept waivering back and forth which made me nervous for some reason.

the second thing I noticed is that John wears the same tie whenever he’s on Conan - check out this clip from 2001

same tie

they start a 60 city tour so best wishes to the kings of keeping fun in the balance.
