song performed: “Daughter” from the album Strange Weirdos
conan’s reaction: “Don’t watch the strain on me. Thank you so much *shakes Loudon’s hand* that was fantastic. Loudon Wainright the third, we’ll take a break, we’ll be right back *claps three times* that was great *touches Loudon’s shoulders and has a chat*”
la venda: I’d sing a song about a man and his singing life, but that’s so Loudon, er even Wainwright. I know of Loudon mainly from his son and daughter - also great songwriters - Rufus and Martha. He came from writing, married a songwriter, had songwriting babies, and is still touring - only this is my parent’s generation - so the images and fans on myspace are small and tour schedule is and “itinerary”.
Loudon is cool, comes from the generation of cool. Yeah, there was the stint on M.A.S.H., but right now Loudon is hot stuff because he bumped heads with Judd Apatow on the recent(ish) release Knocked Up, where Loudon provides the soundtrack. I dig Judd, whom I came across from 2000’s Freak & Geeks TV series. This is good stuff, almost crazy how the paths of people you dig come closer than you think. When I learned this weekend that a friend I’ve met up here went to school with Seth Rogen of same movie and TV series - I’m right at the crossroads.
l’exécution: It’s funny because I don’t see rufus in loudon’s face so much, for sure when he was younger. The setup was nice and relaxed, a bit of a country theme - big acoustic geetar, lap guitar and accordion (french country?).
Loudon is wearing dad jeans, kind of a denim wrangler jean that tapers, and looks relaxed in his kashmir navy v. It’s a short by sweet performance and a great movie song (reminiscent of a simon and garfunkel moment on garden state). Loudon has his strings in these funky loops - very folk cool.
altre note: I like Loudon’s site - a very wii friendly “lwiii.com” Loudon was David Letterman’s band-hand-man in the super early days. can you imagine the soft folk sound of Loudon vs. the jazzy Schaeffer? blastphemy!
