song performed: “Roka” from the album Garden Ruin
conan’s reaction: “that was great. thank you. *shakes elec guitar hand* thank you very much *shakes joey’s hand* that was fantastic, gentlemen *shakes john’s hand and trumpet 2* that’s good. calexico! that is our show. I do want to thank all of our guests. I want to thank dr. phil. I want to thank emily deschanel. stay tuned for last call with carson daly. bye everybody bah bye! *shakes drummer, shakes upright bass, shakes keys, talks with joey*”
how hilarious is vomiting kermit?
I have three carrot coupons behind why I find this band so derned seductive
- I partially grew up in San Diego, which was:
a) close to the actual city of Calexico in California - not to be confused with Mexicali on the other side of the border
b) a big fan city of this band - i remember going to the Casbah and seeing posters from years past for Calexico. a lot of the local record stores dig these guys (sames goes for black heart procession, …and you will know us by the trail of the dead, and even that jason mraz dude)
- I played trumpet in high school - it is a damn cool instrument and as I sit on my butt here writing this, I am thinking I should take it back up again. so seductive.
- I played and sang in a cumbia band Los Chiviricos for one month for two summers. this is a southwest version of that maybe
it’s the day of the dead and we’re all bonded with the pirate clan camping off the river in baja california. thank god someone brought a few trumpet players (two!!!!!) and a band with a standup bass. it’s a beautifully seductive song and a wild range of characters. thickly layered like dolce de leche cakes from years past. joey burns is a uci alum I believe and look where he’s at. i hope he makes the alum newsletter every edition. i mean these cats worked with victoria williams and richard buckner.
I guess this is more a reflection and realization for myself. I played the trumpet always thinking it was too high of ego for myself. now i realize it is perfecion.

song performed: “Smile” from the album Alright, Still
conan’s reaction: “that was great. thank you so much. that was fantastic. *shakes lily’s hand* lily allen everybody, that is our show, do want to thank all of our guests - eva langoria, fred willard, stay tuned for last call with carson daly. bye everybady goodbye. see you tomorrow *bens in to talk with lily*”
Lily’s so cute, er at least interesting, and her song is also so cute. she’s up on stage with clean cut bangs, perfectly straight hair, a bit of a larger black dress on which is cooled out with white sneaker tops. Smile is one of those repetitious songs that gets you hooked, but when you listen to the lyrics there is a bit of a bite to it all.
Lily has the online presence that most marketing gurus dream about, but it has been a presence filled with over-drinking, spats with cameramen, and an over all exhaustion from hitting the top so young so fast. check her out - she tries to bear some guts across her myspace and webpage blogs. Just like I bear 15% of my guts across these conan posts.
I really enjoyed this performance for what it’s worth. Lily’s not stunningly beautiful. She doesn’t bear magic, but just seems like someone to hang with. and her crew is also cute wearing their matching polo shirts. It’s like 7th grade jazz band, but dern good and with free cookies afterward. but just like seeing mickey mouse pass out backstage at disneyland on a 90 degree weekend - there is a dark side to every cookie. especially if it’s the trader joe’s chocolate dunkers - man those are good!

song performed: “Long Before Rock’n'roll” from the album Ode to Ochrasy
conan’s reaction: “Wow! that was great! *shakes lead 1 hand* sounds like they mean it *shakes lead 2 hand* mando diao everybody we’ll take a break, we’ll be right back. *claps four times, shakes bassist hand*”
us network television debut! nice!
so mando diao has been around theoretically since the days of boy meets world. they’re a swedish band, and along the lines of their brotters The Hives, Düngen, and even those cute The Cardigans - they represent garage punk rock, but in a much cleaner form. and I think cleaner all around. there were nods to the Hives on stage, only instead of white ties on black dress, it was black sweater vests over white work shirts.
I found tonight’s performance entertaining. the two leads (one of them is daniel and/or björn?) brought out their Swedish minimalism, sharing a single mic which they went back and forth in rounds of lyrics. the song started out looking at the audience and quickly picked up energy. there was no messing around - veins promptly popped out of necks during shouting, hair that was tennis star length started shaking, and pillow was pronounced “peeeelow”.
there was a lot of energy throughout the song. monitor speakers were decorated with what looked like a lot of crayon coloring. I specifically like the anthem “la la la’s” toward the end, which I find is a big part of Swedish rock.

song performed: “Neighbors” from the album Santi
conan’s reaction: “hey. thanks so much. *shakes William’s hand* The Academy Is everybody. That is our show. I want to thank all of our guests. Mike Myers, our thanks to seth rogen for being here, stay tuned to last call with carson daly, bye everybody bye. *shakes bass, shakes drum, shakes guitar 2, huddles with bass lead and guitar 2 and chats*”
hey I found out something neat. Their record label is called “Fueled By Ramen”, completing the sentence:
The Academy Is… Fueled By Ramen.
front man william is tall and lanky and all in black with bits of pale belly showing when he stretches out. I found his monica lewinsky hair to decently frame his symmetric face in a kind of pretty way for this music like maybe he has a good sense of humor. The rest of the band is a bit shorter with hairdo or tattoo pushed out further.
mics were set up for everyone, although I noticed the tank top drummer did most of the singing. it was a short song and pretty straitforward, but an example of what happens when two rival bands get together and add the word “is” to their name. take that barrett jackman!

song performed: “Daughter” from the album Strange Weirdos
conan’s reaction: “Don’t watch the strain on me. Thank you so much *shakes Loudon’s hand* that was fantastic. Loudon Wainright the third, we’ll take a break, we’ll be right back *claps three times* that was great *touches Loudon’s shoulders and has a chat*”
la venda: I’d sing a song about a man and his singing life, but that’s so Loudon, er even Wainwright. I know of Loudon mainly from his son and daughter - also great songwriters - Rufus and Martha. He came from writing, married a songwriter, had songwriting babies, and is still touring - only this is my parent’s generation - so the images and fans on myspace are small and tour schedule is and “itinerary”.
Loudon is cool, comes from the generation of cool. Yeah, there was the stint on M.A.S.H., but right now Loudon is hot stuff because he bumped heads with Judd Apatow on the recent(ish) release Knocked Up, where Loudon provides the soundtrack. I dig Judd, whom I came across from 2000’s Freak & Geeks TV series. This is good stuff, almost crazy how the paths of people you dig come closer than you think. When I learned this weekend that a friend I’ve met up here went to school with Seth Rogen of same movie and TV series - I’m right at the crossroads.
l’exécution: It’s funny because I don’t see rufus in loudon’s face so much, for sure when he was younger. The setup was nice and relaxed, a bit of a country theme - big acoustic geetar, lap guitar and accordion (french country?).
Loudon is wearing dad jeans, kind of a denim wrangler jean that tapers, and looks relaxed in his kashmir navy v. It’s a short by sweet performance and a great movie song (reminiscent of a simon and garfunkel moment on garden state). Loudon has his strings in these funky loops - very folk cool.
altre note: I like Loudon’s site - a very wii friendly “lwiii.com” Loudon was David Letterman’s band-hand-man in the super early days. can you imagine the soft folk sound of Loudon vs. the jazzy Schaeffer? blastphemy!

song performed: “Falling Up” from the album The Sermon On Exposition Blvd.
conan’s reaction: “Thank you so much that was fantastic. *shakes Rickie’s hand* Thank you. Rickie Lee Jones everybody, we’ll take a break, we’ll be right back *claps three times, leans in to talk to Rickie, shakes guitar hand*.”
holy biscuit soda can. it has been a while since I’ve put pen to paper to write about conan and music. so let’s get it started like apple d already. did you miss my conanigans? I’m back datings these entries till we’re all caught up - cause A) who’s going to read them anyway and B) yesterday’s vinegar doesn’t necessarily mix well with today’s eggs if you know what I mean. enjoy again!
la venda: rickie, self-proclaimed “dutchess of coolsville” (ironically uncool?), probably deserves a “where are they now?” two-minny blip on vh-1 …HOWEVER…stop the presses cause she’s like so today anyway. like duh. just do a search for “Have You Had Enough?” and check out one of a million videos of what is essentially Squirrel Nut Zipper’s “Put a Lid on It” with quasi new lyrics and less of that nutty zip. it’s like the political mashup jib jab of today.
I know that Rickie had a hit when she had a crush on Chuck D from Public Enemy and sang ’bout it, but other than that I only know what I hear. it’s smooth. it’s a touch soulful and nasal and freespirited and kind of girlish as well. totally unique and no relation to tommy.
l’exécution: it’s a tom-tom song, and at first I was thinking this was a long intro. but low-and-beeswax it was a momentum building the hole song! Rickie looks like a wise professor or art curator dressed in black who just appened to strap on a geetar. by the second stanza the band is on their primary instruments with keyboard beard toque man still pounding away on the tambs.
Rickie’s voice is still in great shape, maybe not really aging at all. About a third of the way through she started gesturing as well and a loud long note was nice and controlled. Keyboard man will not put down the tambourine. put it down put it down.
“Do you know my name?” time got a little bit spasmy, but was still great and you could see good emotional from Rickie Lee Jones that she was right at home on stage again.
altre note: Rickie Lee Jones wrote the song “Chuck E’s in Love” when she was dating Tom Waits. that may not sound cool, but Chuck E. was a real person - Chuck E. Weiss, who is Johnny Depp’s other owner half of L.A.’s Viper Room, notorious night club where River Phoenix died. put that in your coinky dink and smoke it.

finally some connecting of the dots, recommended though definitely not long enough to warrant all of the previews
