conan’s reaction: “good job *shakes guitar 2 hand* very cool. hey *shakes lead hand* that was great nicely done *shakes guitar 1 hand, skirts and shakes keyboard hand* dr dog eveyone we’ll take a break we’ll be right back stick around *claps 3 times shakes drummer hand*”
well crap kids, it looks like the first band that was completely below my radar. I heard the name dr. dog and was like - “man, bad, bad, band name” and I think that was the whole point. They even toured with MMJ and M Ward and were fresh new. and while dr. dog’s sound is probably not my sweet spot with their 60’s-america-pop sound (although I’ve been known to dabble in ventura highway), i get the impression that their new album may be actually one of those amazing albums that you can listen to again and again.
when things started out I was like - holy cow! I’ve just watched the whole season of season 3 beauty and the geek and the whole nate dern look pre-makeover IS cool (not that I needed convincing - I just can’t grow a beard otherwise I’d look like…)

…and with conan’s horn section i was in this strange zone where chicago meets elvis costello meets joe cocker meets america? and the lead singer totally looks like a grown up version of this kid I went to school with in elementary school who was severely adhd and allergic to red food dyes. kind of off balance and scary, but then smaller and wimpier so not a threat. there’s a good mix up and then probably one of the happiest bouncing around moments I’ve seen on stage in years. ending superb.
if I was in LA tomorrow, I would so go see them at the troubadour no doubt, but alas I’m canadian now.
on a side note. I’ve added nate as a friend on myspace.
