song performed: “What A Wonderful Man” from the album Okonokos
conan’s reaction: “Hey, that’s great. *rushes on stage shakes guitar 2 hand* *shakes bass hand* Hey, that’s cool. *shakes lead hand* My Morning Jacket, we’ll take everybody, we’ll be right back. That was killer *pats lead on shoulder*.”
Probably the last time I would regularly browse music stores was back in 2003, I would jet with my roommate and we would eat donair and get our greasy hands all over the listening booths at various music stores. One of the bands we both came across then was this CD entitled It Still Moves by a couple buddies in Kentucky - My Morning Jacket. That itself did not have any significance per se, BUT a few weeks later there was a performance of “One Big Holiday” on Conan O’Brien (orig aired 9.18.03). It was absolutely amazing.
Keep in mind that I was working long days back then, so bedtime wasn’t 1:30 am. Still, somehow I along with a few friends caught that performance. We were all working - what were we doing catching Late Night? It was a total coincidence and maybe something that was meant to be. That performance is one of my favorite Late Night performances of all time - even Conan was totally blown away. I remember Conan’s reaction, which is now why I record his reaction to all performances.
I highly suggest if you are reading this blog, that you check out that performance - it’s up on My Morning Jacket’s website under video streams here.
Leno had Johnny Mathis on which was a hard to follow, seriously.
The first thing I noticed is that the band overall got a hair cut! Same positions on stage as before, but everyone except for the drummer had shorter locks. Jim James the lead singer had on some wicked boots and though he was shoulder length, he still had a rough-cut look as three years earlier. It’s unfair to compare previous performances on Conan, but the band looked a bit prettier.
It’s also hard to compare because the song performed this time was not as strong, but there was still good headbanging and screaming. Jim has this amazing ability to sing just sharp or flat and it still sounds good. There were a few moments where the song lost a bit of its sound momentum, like during the guitar solo. I found it strange that the band also seemed to play in the dark compared to other acts.
In the song, Jim sings that he wanted ice cream. I also think he was singing about either a jesus man, or cult leader, but what do i know. Kind of a weak song really. The band still played with a lot of hear so it was a good performance overall.
Tomorrow night is a comedy performance, so we’ll see you next week when Conan is in San Francisco!!
song performed: “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” from Plans
conan’s reaction: “That was great, thank you so much. *shakes Ben’s hand* Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie. We’ll take a break, we’ll be right back” *Claps twice, taps Ben on should and the two start talking*”
So tonight it was a solo set with Ben and the stage set-up was much more what I would imagine a solo set to look like (see notes on Lindsey Buckingham’s performance). It was a dark stage with a calm backlighting and I write this a huge bumblebee just popped out of our laundry area and I had to hide and then kill it with the help of my hunter cat. crazy no? I admit I was scared and my cat saved the day beating it down so I could smack it. My place isn’t so big so I was fearful of getting stung in the bum. I digress.
Ben had to start the song twice probably due to audience applause or a misqueue or something. It was a great song with only the occassional “mic barfing” by Ben that was distracting. Ben is great at writing melodies, some have become anthemic such as Death Cab for Cutie’s “Soul Meets Body” or Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights”.
Apparently Ben is on a solo tour right now, and is also moving into film with a role in The Office’s John Krasinski’s David Foster Wallace’s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. Now is a good time for Ben.
song performed: “Colony of Birchmen” from Blood Mountain
conan’s reaction: “that was cool thanks for doing it *shakes guitar 2 hand* that was great *shakes bass hand* that was great *shakes guitar 1 hand* and with you. *shakes drum hand* Mastodon everybody, we’ll take a break we’ll be right back. *claps six times reshakes bass and guitar 2 hand*”
Maybe it was the guest Jack McBrayer from 30 rock, in his southern innocence, who was on right before Mastodon. Maybe it was the baked kabocha I have been eating all week. I was surprised when Mastodon came out with a sound that is familiar, yet I really haven’t heard anything like it since maybe the likes of Canada’s Tea Party?
And they rocked it. I learned pretty quickly on into the performance that the band likes checker board patterns. The drummer especially - his drum kit was all checkered and in the video for this song, he is wearing old school vans that are black and white checkered too. The back sound wall had some of the coolest lighting I’ve ever seen on Conan, flashing bands of checkerings. It was cool.
Lead guitar man had a really nice guitar - literally an axe and because of his beard, recent-looking hair cut, and extremely long arms, I could picture him slaying away. During chorus time, the other gang came into sing (minus the drummer who was plenty busy banging away the counter rhythms in a lot of these songs). Bass dude looked eddie vedder-ish, but less pretty boy and more goat which is fitting for their sound.
There was good amounts of wailing and good old fashioned noise making, but it was polished and therefore very energy inducing. The guitar solo was quasi cool, but the ending was right on with a lifting of axes on the final note. I liked that each person on stage played their instruments like it was their territory.
Also worth mentioning is that their video for this song has a neat little animation at the end, which is the first time I’ve seen a buck fend off a pack of wolves.
BTW, I am soooo sick right now of the budweiser commercial with the red mahogany guitar construction. I hate budweiser right now cause I’ve seen that commercial way too many times for my own good.

Borat made a performance as a goodwill gesture for a “cultural” misunderstanding which featured probably the best dueling guitar/synthesizer performance I’ve ever seen. It was nice.
lyrics: (singing about Pamela Anderson)
You have a pretty face, and hairs that is gold
Your body is nice, like a seven year old
I wants in the world, that you’d be my wife
But if you cheat on me, you pay with your life
You be my wife
I treat you nice
We will make love
Whenever I like
I give you new shoes
And dress that is red
Give my love just to you
Since my old wife is dead

song performed: “Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off” from A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
conan’s reaction: “thank you. nice job. *quick shake bass hand* that was cool *quick shake lead hand* thank you very much. *shake guitar hand* panic at the disco that’s our show we’d like to thank our guests robin williams. christian slater. stay tuned for last call with carson daly bah bah everybody bah bah *shakes organ and drum*”
Oh man, I know that PATD was like one of the hottest bands of 2006 (who came out of nowhere btw), but I guess I don’t listen to enough FM radio to know much more about these lads from Las Vegas. And I know they get street cred for touring with the likes of Bloc Party, but with a song title name of “Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off”, I’m already sticking my index finger down my throat.
I find this emo pop to be, in general, crap, because it neither makes me want to jump around the room like a fool nor does it help console me on deep dark days - it’s a fake friend, and unfortunately PATD is the leader of this school.
The audio in the beginning was strange and remained so a bit, like the vocals were mainly being picked up by the monitor speakers. Lead singer man looks like Freddie Prinze circa She’s All That. There was a eerie lighting on the drum kit, which makes me think that the drummer dude is important, or his dad is the bank. Alternative vocals by guitar man were, uh, pretty bad (very flat and weak) and I think it was because his clothes didn’t fit right, cause the lead singer man with his properly tailored pants could belt out the high notes alright.
I was totally confused about the cellist in the back left corner. why? also, why the grand piano? toe tall lee unnecessary.
These boys are young and should be very close to the lyrics they are singing about (high school - didn’t they just graduate?), but it seems like they are going through the motions.

Jyuuuust incase you happen to watch “Chef at Home”, and you watch the beginning of the show, there is an intro song that involves a combination of siren-like singing, chef michael smith’s voice, and a kind of female voiceover echo. I dig his show, but this intro gets more and more bizarre to me each episode I watch. So…I thought I would get down the lyrics to the best of my ability for your enjoyment.
Key:

The song repeats at the start and end of every commercial break too, with bits of the lyrics (”you can do it too - you can do it too”)

so I found that foodtv canada’s moving some shows around and one of the shows will be jamie oliver’s new cooking show “jamie at home”, which i’m excited about as it is the first new show material from him in about 4-5 years. nice. mr. oliver is one of my heroes due to his down-to-earth way of cooking, helping others, and educating - as his whole school lunch campaign was very inspiring (to many).
also, jamie has a podcast now, complete with some video clips, so I’ll be checking it out. what’s rules more than free cooking shows by jamie, updated frequently.
