MGOC: Bayside

conan’s reaction to the set: “*right hand shakes guitar 2 hand on way in* Thanks very much. *right hand quick shakes lead’s hand* Hey, really nice song. *reaches with right, quick shakes bass hand* Thank you. *right hand shakes drummer’s hand* I like your squirrels.  Bayside everybody. *turns to look at lead singer taking out his earplugs*  Nicely done, we’ll take a break, we’ll be right back. stick around. *claps thrice*“.

“Duality”  The lights were primary red yellow and blue and I felt the performance came off that way too.  the singing was kind of off, maybe like the band had a cold?   some of the guitar playing and rhythm was off a bit too for a song I could tell would sound energetic and rad on player. Singing about being alive, I hate to admit I had feelings at the end that this was a Christian Rock band *sorry*. ouch.  I don’t know Bayside, but I didn’t get anything special from this band - especially since they are from NYC.

BTW< their album sells for $9.99 at Target.  Their myspace friends are replaced mainly their band clothing, also on sale.

I give them cred for being plugged in tech-wise, and maybe it’s my “bayside-means-near-oakland” upbringing, but I can say my first dissapointing performance I’ve blogged about in ‘07.

QOTD: What’s your favorite blend or brand of coffee or tea?

Since I don’t have a javapodz or a whatzipacket fancy espresso machine.  I’m drinking office coffee.  I think the blend is “roasted coffee bean”, which tastes much better freshly brewed.

the question isn’t WHAT I’m drinking though, so I’d say my favorite blend of coffee is costa rican - you can’t go wrong.

my favorite blend of tea is honesty.

MGOC: King Solomon Burke

conan’s reaction to the end of the show: “*big cow tow* That was fantastic. *shakes Solomon’s hand and points* This is the guy Solomon Burke. Let’s take a break, we’ll be right back.  Thank you so much *bows forward and shakes Solomon’s hand again*”

okay for this performance I was totally having deja vu when this set began. I swore (swOAR) I saw this set on Jay Leno a few weeks ago.  Like say on February 9th (ring a late night bell?).  Visually, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, King Solomon is huge.  He is seated in a killer throne with red trimmings but literally looks like he’s still standing which gives off this strange hovering/levitation look.   Who cares, the man is wearing shades, suit, and a hat inside - that’s taste.  He’s also center stage with his guitar and bass accompanyment on the far corners of the stage.

I remember seeing B.B. King back in like ‘99 in Indy and they wheeled out a chair for him (read: throne).  He explained that after 40 some years playing, some with diabetes at that, he deserves a seat when he plays.  I agree and Solomon has a career almost extensive, so I was cool with it.  The man sings about following a girl to Memphis, as in like he’ll follow her to the ends of the world.  Well, that’s cool and all, but I noticed that at the end of the song he sings about getting to Memphis…

“By the greyhound bus, by the train, by the plane, Oh car just ain’t the same.”

So really, Solomon will follow the love of his life to the ends of the earth, provided that he doesn’t have to deal with Hertz.  I’m guess I’m cool with that too.

Note:  I actually spent the entire time trying to figure out what flower he is singing into.  I don’t have HDTV, so I could only make out flower color - not sure?

MGOC: G Love & Tristan Prettyman

also check out here

conan’s reaction to the end of the show: “That was nice.  *shakes G’s hand* Thank you so much.  G Love *shakes Tristan’s hand* Tristan Prettyman.  Thank you so much, that was fantastic we’ll be right back”

I have to admit I’m biased because back in ‘94, when I was in NYC for Thanksgiving, I got to run into the gigantic Tower Records there which completely blew my mind.  I remember I found and bought G Love & Special Sauce, Digable Planet’s “Blowout Comb”, and Vince Guaraldi Trio’s “A Charlie Brown Christmas”.  G Love would become part of my cool vocabulary.

In Fall ‘97 I would see him open up for Dave Matthews Band at UCSD.  Again in ‘01 I would see him at the House of Blues in West LA.  Dates may be skewed, but the shows were important.  His CD’s would get me through dull days at work in college.  Even his enhanced CD show “Cooking wit G” would help re-inforce in my brain that home boys can cook and be cool too (and that fresh food is better).

Tristan would also cross my path in 2002 - she was a local hit in San Diego and the local venues and stations ate her up (post Jason Mraz explosion, she seemed next to go).

So it was a treat to see them together in a classy New York style set.  The song was nothing to save a soup bone for, but sometimes you got to be a fan.

MGOC: Steven Kaplan

tonight’s guest was not a music guest, but is noteworthy in that it was one of the most awkward interviews I’ve seen on Conan in years. Steven Kaplan is a bread expert, has studied bread for 40 years, and basically turns a stack of baguettes into a phallic nightmare. Go see if it’s on YouTube, cause it is worth seeing.

MGOC: Get Ready for Jonny Lives!

first they get props cause they pay props to conan, okay that outta the way *said in a Rachael Ray voice and neck crush*

conan’s reaction to the end of the show: “That was good. That was good. Thanks for doing it *shakes bass player’s hand*. *shakes lead singer’s hand* Teach me to do that *points at lead guitarist’s guitar*, that was great. *shakes 2nd guitar’s hand* That was good. Sir, *shakes drummer’s hand* that was great. Jonny Lives! We’ll take a break we’ll be right back. *pats lead guitarist on the shoulder* *lifts hands over back of head signifying he wants to learn how to guitar solo while holding the guitar over his head*.

From the lower east side of NYC, comes four sex “lush & dirty, glossy & gritty” guys. My first impression was that this is rock song about commitment (does that make this christian rock? I mean probably not, rockers can be cute and ironic right?) - actually my first impression was that these guys were a UK-badge-out version of Everclear with a guitar sound I was crazy about back in ‘95 “lonely and still dreaming of your ghost”, but not so crazy about in ‘07. Don’t believe me? Go to their myspace page and listen to the track “Outside”. It’s “Santa Monica” but with lower east side guys playing a portland band singing about west cozy la.

Good stage presence, although at some times in the performance the background checkered lighting took over my field of attention. I felt like “hey this is close to what it was like to watching the kinks, but with a rather well built spinal tappish lead singer”. Not the frail drug-skinny look that I would associate with the song. So it totally elevated the performance when frontman pulled a decent guitar solo on the yoke of his back (good thing he was tall and gargantuan).

Also worth noting, the bass player didn’t really do anything buy hang cool before the first chorus which in itself is way cool. even when he started plucking away all sexually he still looked cool. that is, until he started singing backup, and the mic was aimed straight up his nose. like he had to stretch up tall to get with the mic, and then it was straight up his nose - totally dorky dude. best to check mic heights ALONG with sound during the check.

Jim Carey also made a small appearance with the mw7 singing about his hair  - here are the lyrics…

“give me a ton of that hair
shoulder-length and longer
here baby, there momma,
everywhere daddy daddy
hair, hair, hair, hair
hair, hair, hair, blowing
blowin, long as i can grow my hey-yah”

jim carey looked like claire danes by the way.

ROB: lemons

Making lemonades out of lemons has been replaced by “If you have lemons, save them - their zest totally kicks major booty on fish and lamb dishes”.

TTLLC: under my cat

This time I saw a square edge underneath my cat who was sitting next to me - I freaked!

another ramen soup flavor packet - jerks!

qotd from VOX

What was the worst job you ever had?

probably washing a whole barn of goat terds clean twice a day in 100 degree summer weather. the poop was washed into a tank underneath a grate the goats walked around on. can we say chewed up everything i owned and a nasty poop-happy mosquito problem. i used to spray the bugs into the zapper which added the smell of burnt hair to goat smells.

10 channels

starting with 30 rock - here’s ten phrases from channel surfing

  1. Well you look happy, somebody just have a rootbeer float?
  2. If I really like going to it, it kills me.
  3. But Harper wouldn’t back down
  4. Look Connie I came to take you somewhere, what’s the matter?
  5. Nissan sees sales slumping in US and Japan
  6. So if your life cycle changes unexpectedly
  7. It doesn’t mean I can’t lay you down woman and touch your skin
  8. and a line here and a line here and a line for a handle
  9. heat activated to help more torque hit the road
  10. has anyone seen marios pestil, he’s lost it
tonight, ten channels didn’t make much sense together, so I’ve cut a few words from each phrase and created a three second script…

setting: 1940’s in Glendale, CA. downtown_Smooth Ed pulls up to Connie in a convertible. Connie is in a group of friends returning home from cheerleader practise_

Smooth Ed: “Well you look happy.” *car slows to a stop* [sarcastic] “It KILLS me.”

Connie: *sigh* “Back down

Smooth Ed: *squints with attitude* “Look Connie I came to take you somewhere *gesticulates treading water* in US and Japan. If your life cycle changes unexpectedly, it doesn’t mean a line here and a line here and a line to help.”

*long pause, then Smooth Ed accelerates slowly away”

Connie: *rolls eyes to girlfriends* “He’s lost it.”
